How To Keep The Team Engaged Despite Work From Home Set Up
by Danica Valle
When the pandemic hit the world in 2020, almost all companies closed and adapted the work from home setting to avoid the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Most of us aren’t prepared to work from home full-time, even if you have done it before. The change is too drastic and sudden without any transition which makes remote work extremely challenging for both employees and employers.
Nobody knows when this setup is going to last and that's what makes it particularly hectic and hard. To help ease your worries, here are 4 tips to keep your team engaged despite despite remote work!
- Communicate regularly
There will be some bumps in the roads if the employees aren’t familiar with remote work setup. It can cause some setbacks and issues along with the workload. It might be hard at first but with the right guidance from co-workers, it’s going to be alright. It’s important to invest into a video conferencing tool for your employees to let them share personal and professional updates as well.
Work from home setup cuts a lot of the casual conversations your team is having during lunch or coffee breaks to stop the monotony of work. You might be able to do that virtually. Host a coffee break video conference and let your team talk about themselves. These little pauses are vital and could go a long way.
-
Acknowledge your employees
Recognizing your employees’ efforts can add to the overall success of a campaign or better -- your company! When you acknowledge their outstanding work, they will feel motivated and rejoiced at their contributions to the team.
Most of your employees are working from home, alone, with no one to talk to. Acknowledging your employees can cause a ripple effect throughout the entire time that they’re working from home.
-
Engage with fun
Understanding what your people have been going through during tough times helps on how you should deal with their situation. Frequent check-ins during your work week can give you an idea on what you should change and how you can improve their 9-5 work day. You can also add in elements of fun during team meetings such as playing games. It’s not just interactive but your employees will have fun as well. You can even give rewards like coupons and discount cards to the winning team!
You can also start every work day with yoga or light exercise classes over a video conference call. It will help your employees to prepare before actual work. Give them something that signals the beginning of their work day.
4. Establish defined working hours
You should be able to distinguish the start and end of your employees’ working hours. Sometimes, the line gets blurred out because everyone is staying at home. Refrain from sending your employee a chat, text, or e-mail if work is already done for the day, or if it’s the weekend. Give them space and let them relax, you don’t want to be the one to cause their burnout.
Having a separate time and space will allow you and your team to be more present in your home life.
While we don’t have a cure for the virus yet, it’s good that we adopted the work-from-home practices to deal with the situation at hand. It’s one of the many ways to sustain your company. Thanks to technology, remote work can now be smooth and productive.
Reaching out, connecting, and taking care of one another should be part of our daily tasks now. We should also be able to take care of our mental health amidst the pandemic so that we won’t get lost in the sea of deadlines and unfortunate news.
