4 Tips to Run A Successful Virtual Brainstorming Session
by Danica Valle
Numerous companies adopted the work from home set-up while the pandemic is still ongoing. There are various changes that are bound to happen within your company. Meetings, training, and brainstorming sessions are now all virtual and these can be successful when there’s collaboration within your team.
Brainstorming is a productive activity your employees do. It is an effective method for your team to think of new ideas for the business and find resolutions to problems. Different teams usually hold brainstorming sessions at the start of new projects or campaigns to jumpstart the planning process.
However, everything done separately and virtually can be difficult. One of the most challenging aspects of virtual meetings is to keep your employees’ attention at all times. In a situation where you can’t demand attention, you have to learn how the attendees can engage voluntarily.
It might be hard to lead a virtual brainstorming session since there are people discussing ideas all at once. Here are four tips for you to have a successful brainstorming session -- even at home:
-
Set your goals
Discuss what your goal and intended outcome are before starting a new project or campaign. Ensure that all participants will have the time to jot down any ideas or questions from the discussion. Listen to suggestions and make sure that you are on the same page.
-
Prepare your participants
Whether you’re hosting a brainstorming session virtually or in person, you need to prepare the participants in advance to run a productive meeting. Give them also a heads up on what tools or resources they’ll need for the discussion.
-
Appoint a facilitator
Assign a facilitator to avoid distractions and out-of-topic talks. It’s important to assign a person that will step in and bring everyone back to the objectives that you’re discussing. Ensure that the facilitator isn’t afraid to speak up and can help people who are intimidated to talk.
-
Keep it short
The meeting should be one hour tops. Anything beyond that might cause people to be bored or distracted. Be respectful to your employees’ time. They might work late on other tasks if they stay in the session.
After the session, send the participants the minutes of your brainstorming session, and don’t forget to thank them for their time and participation. Not being able to work in close proximity may be a challenge at times, you just need to adjust on how your employees conduct virtual meetings. What might work on face-to-face meetings isn’t guaranteed to work virtually. Using these tips and a small investment on preparedness can make a huge impact on your business.
